It is characterized by enormous sand dunes of vivid pink-to-orange color, an indication of a high concentration of oxidized iron in the sand.\u00c2\u00a0 The oldest dunes are more intensely reddish and are among the highest in the world, most above 200 meters.\u00c2\u00a0 The tallest, about 380 meters high, is nicknamed Big Daddy.\u00c2\u00a0 Although the dune area is a major tourist attraction, its vastness leaves you feeling alone in a formidable land &#8211; that is, until you reach \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Big Daddy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Great Mama\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with their\u00c2\u00a0 international hordes of youth and hikers making their way up the steep sand mountains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1118\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Dunes-2-copy.jpg\" alt=\"dunes-dunes-2-copy\" width=\"800\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Dunes-2-copy.jpg 800w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Dunes-2-copy-300x168.jpg 300w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Dunes-2-copy-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>Sossusvlei is actually a salt and clay pan surrounded by hundreds of connected sand dunes in the southern part of the Namib Desert. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Vlei\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is the Afrikaans word for &#8220;marsh&#8221;, while &#8220;sossus&#8221; is Nama for &#8220;no return&#8221; or &#8220;dead end&#8221;.\u00c2\u00a0 This area was once a drainage basin for the Tsauchab River.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1126\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1126\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1126\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dune-Arial-004-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Notice helicopter in center at top edge!\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dune-Arial-004-copy.jpg 333w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dune-Arial-004-copy-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1126\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Notice helicopter in center at top edge!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When we helicoptered over this wilderness, the notion of being lost and wandering in the desert for 40 years became plausible.\u00c2\u00a0 Drop me down there and I would, shy of divine intervention, never find my way out!<\/p>\n<p>The highest and more stable dunes are partially covered with vegetation, watered not only by underground rivers that occasionally flood the pans, but also by the daily morning fog that enters the desert from the Atlantic Ocean. When dry, these pans with their high concentration of salt look almost white in color.\u00c2\u00a0 The dunes, however, when bathed in the golden light at the edges of day and night, turn bright orange with the shadowed side turning nearly jet black.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1120\" style=\"width: 327px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1120\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1120\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Oryx-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Oryx last for weeks without water.\" width=\"317\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Oryx-copy.jpg 317w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Oryx-copy-190x300.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oryx last for weeks without water.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Animal and insect life in the Sossusvlei area is relatively abundant. It is mostly comprised of small creatures that can survive with little water, including a number of arthropods, small reptiles and petite mammals such as rodents or jackals; bigger animals include oryxes, springboks and ostriches. Strangely, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fog beetles\u00e2\u20ac\u009d have developed a technique for collecting water from early morning fogs through the bumps in their back.<\/p>\n<p>At the base of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Big Daddy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Great Mama\u00e2\u20ac\u009d one finds Deadvlei, a white clay pan that used to be an oasis hosting several varieties of acacia trees. Centuries ago, when the climate changed and drought hit the area, sand dunes encroached on the pan, blocking the river that watered the oasis.\u00c2\u00a0 The trees died, leaving the white salty floor of the pan punctuated by the blackened, dead acacia trees.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1119\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-deadvlei-copy.jpg\" alt=\"dunes-deadvlei-copy\" width=\"326\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-deadvlei-copy.jpg 326w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-deadvlei-copy-196x300.jpg 196w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/>The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are believed to have died between 1340- 1430 CE, are now black because the intense light and heat of the sun has scorched them.\u00c2\u00a0 Strangely enough, these blackened trees are not petrified, for the wood is so dry it does not decompose. The white pan, the blackened trees, and the intense orange of the surrounding dunes create a particularly fascinating and surrealistic landscape that appears in innumerable pictures and has been used as a setting for films and videos.<\/p>\n<p>Eager to add these recognizable shots to our stock portfolios, we hiked in before sunrise to see the first light illuminate the dunes, but the whole area was socked in with heavy fog.\u00c2\u00a0 We had no idea that there were even sand dunes surrounding the eerie waterless lake.\u00c2\u00a0 The mist was mystical, but eventually it gave way to the sun that was by then already fairly high in the sky.\u00c2\u00a0 Not only were there huge dunes surrounding us, but dozens of people hiking on their berms!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1121\" style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1121\" class=\" wp-image-1121\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-WhiteLady-Spider-copy.jpg\" alt=\"White Lady Spider lives under the sand\" width=\"398\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-WhiteLady-Spider-copy.jpg 500w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-WhiteLady-Spider-copy-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">White Lady Spider lives under the sand<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I saw no burning bush but still felt the presence of the Divine One, whispering with the blowing red sands, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I shall be who I shall be.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 The Namib Desert has been dancing for over 43 million years, and, although we didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do our desert wandering for 40 years or even 40 days, my 40 hours in that environment was still, for me, a vision-filled healing quest from which I emerged into a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153promised land.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t skip over your desert journeys, they eventually bring great blessings!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1123\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1123\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1123\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Deadvlei-Sun-copy.jpg\" alt=\"Deadvlei after the fog lifted.\" width=\"800\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Deadvlei-Sun-copy.jpg 800w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Deadvlei-Sun-copy-300x185.jpg 300w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Dunes-Deadvlei-Sun-copy-768x472.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deadvlei after the fog lifted.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Desert, for me, is a vast, barren land where the extremes of nature are found.\u00c2\u00a0 As the wind blows, one can quickly be lost in wilderness wanderings, hopefully to emerge with new insights and dreams.
