{"id":345,"date":"2012-02-28T03:45:59","date_gmt":"2012-02-28T03:45:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/?p=345"},"modified":"2012-02-28T03:45:59","modified_gmt":"2012-02-28T03:45:59","slug":"february-week-3-light-and-lens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/?p=345","title":{"rendered":"February Week 3 &#8211; Light and lens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is nothing more exciting to most photographers than a beautiful sky at sunset, except for a silhouetted subject in front of it.\u00c2\u00a0 I had both these elements before me last week at Pigeon Point Lighthouse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-PigeonPtSS-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-346\" title=\"Feb wk 3 PigeonPtSS web\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-PigeonPtSS-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"334\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-PigeonPtSS-web.jpg 334w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-PigeonPtSS-web-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 334px) 100vw, 334px\" \/><\/a>50 miles south of San Francisco, on our central coast line, a 115 foot high Lighthouse raises from the cliff side. \u00c2\u00a0It is one of the tallest in the USA and has been guiding mariners since 1872.\u00c2\u00a0 The lighthouse is run by the California State Parks. Entrance to the lighthouse has been closed since 2001 when a portion of the cornice on the exterior of the lighthouse fell off.\u00c2\u00a0 Presently funds are being raised and the restoration project is underway<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Its five-wick lard oil lamp, and first-order Fresnel lens, comprised of 1,008 prisms, was first lit at sunset, November 15, 1872. The lens stands 16 feet tall, 6 feet in diameter, and weighs 8,000 pounds. It sits in a lantern room that had been constructed at the Lighthouse Service&#8217;s general depot in New York before being shipped around the Horn. Although the original Fresnel lens is no longer in use, the <a title=\"lighthouse\" href=\"http:\/\/parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=533\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">lighthouse<\/span><\/strong> <\/a>is still an active U.S. Coast Guard aid to navigation using a 24 inch Aero Beacon. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/p>\n<p>Sunset photography can be an exposure challenge.\u00c2\u00a0 I suggest you set your camera on the spot metering mode and select a location about 30 degrees off \u00c2\u00a0the sun.\u00c2\u00a0 Take your reading and dial it in manually. Or you can set your camera for negative compensation of 2\/3 to 2 stops, and watch your histogram.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-EucBls-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-347\" title=\"Feb wk 3 EucBls web\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-EucBls-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-EucBls-web.jpg 336w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Feb-wk-3-EucBls-web-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a>Budding and blooming Eucalyptus plants are among my favorite floral subjects.\u00c2\u00a0 As the bud begins to open it throws off its cap like a French Brett being tossed aside so one can let the wind blow through her hair.<\/p>\n<p>I was using my 100 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 400mm lens at 400 mm with a 12mm extension tube.\u00c2\u00a0 Extension tubes are designed to enable a lens to focus closer than its normal set minimum focusing distance. Getting closer has the effect of magnifying your subject (making it appear larger in the viewfinder and in your pictures). They are exceptionally useful for macro photography, enabling you to convert almost any lens into a macro lens.<\/p>\n<p>Using 400 mm instead of 100mm or wider helps me narrow the background and keep out competing \u00c2\u00a0and distracting colors or subjects.\u00c2\u00a0 I also use a relatively shallow depth of field (f\/8) so that nothing in the background is in focus.
