With a look of frustration on her face she asked, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Is there anything to do here besides walk around and look at trees?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>I tried not to chuckle while allowing only my rolling eyes to be my laughter. I responded: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Basically that is what people from all over the world come here to do.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But, if you want to see something else, there are a few herds of Roosevelt elk around the park &#8211; and lots of banana slugs once you start looking for them.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 As I suspected, that was not quite what she was looking for.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Oh yes,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153that sound that you are hearing is a Murrelet, which is an ocean bird that flies here to nest way up in the top of these redwoods.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 They need lots of ocean to take off, running for quite a while on top of the water before becoming airborne.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Here they find the tallest tree so when they leave the nest they just drop out hoping to get up enough flapping speed before they hit the ground.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-ElkBoxing-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-962\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-ElkBoxing-web.jpg\" alt=\"June wk 1 - ElkBoxing web\" width=\"500\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-ElkBoxing-web.jpg 500w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-ElkBoxing-web-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>The young woman didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seem very impressed although she perked up when I said the word \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ocean.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 So I explained how to get to Gold Bluffs Beach and that there were other accessible beaches on the way to Crescent City. Then I added, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And just 18 miles north at Klamath you will find a Casino.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d She finally smiled.<\/p>\n<p>I continued, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Down the road you might see the newborn elk calf,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but before I could give her the directions she was already heading out.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t forget to look at the trees,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I yelled after her, &#8220;that is what most people come to see.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 And no wonder: the Redwood National and State Parks encompass 106,000 acres of forest, prairies and coastal lands.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the people in the campground were returning from their hikes of 10 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 15 miles.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But I was proud of my 3.75 miles that day because I also took the time to look at the trees.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Old growth redwoods have been growing here before recorded history.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Awesome!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Plants and animals have established intricate communities among the redwoods and formed interdependent relationships with the trees.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_963\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-Reflection-Web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-963\" class=\"size-full wp-image-963\" src=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-Reflection-Web.jpg\" alt=\"Fallen Rhododendron Blossom and Reflection \" width=\"365\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-Reflection-Web.jpg 365w, http:\/\/stacy.awegallery.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/June-wk-1-Reflection-Web-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fallen Rhododendron Blossom and Reflection<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Even the snails and slugs are important.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 They are the decomposers who dispose of everything from bear poop to fallen limbs.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Without them the forest would become one impassible heap of forest debris.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get a chance to tell the young woman that Prairie Creek Redwood State Park has it all &#8212; roaming elk, towering redwoods, banana slugs, blooming Rhododendrons, fern-lined canyons and beaches galore.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe, instead of trying to find something to do, we need to simply stop and look and wonder.<\/p>\n<p>(Don&#8217;t tell anyone &#8211;
